The management strategies and barn environment at DoJo Holsteins has given them great success in keeping their S.C.C. and Bactoscan levels low without the use of any mastitis or dry off treatment.

We, here at Pasture Barn Designs, have not used antibiotics to treat our dairy cows for mastitis or dry off in the past 15 years.

A current trending topic of conversation in the dairy industry revolves around antibiotic usage. Specifically, the negative impact that antibiotic usage has on drug resistance and therefore, human health.

We, at Pasture Barn Designs, have not used any antibiotics for either dry off treatment or mastitis treatment on our cows since moving them to the Pasture Barn.

Our somatic cell count (SCC), as well as our bacteria counts, have not increased since moving the cows from our tie stall to the Pasture Barn. Since moving, we have received milk Quality Awards and have maintained a high level of milk production. We remain in the 99th percentile in milk production according to the Dairy Herd Improvement association records, without the use of antibiotics in the past 15 years. Yes, we can have high quality milk without the use of antibiotics!

It doesn’t mean we don’t get any cases of mastits, because we do get a couple a year. However, we use conventional ways to treat them- not antibiotics.
